Belém Tower is a fortified tower located in Belém in Lisbon. Under the UNESCO World Heritage (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery. The tower was a part of a defense system at the river.
The tower was built in the early 16th century. Now sits near the shore because the
river was redirected after the 1755 earthquake. The tower was built originally on a small island in the Tagus River.
